Deputies: Man arrested for killing his girlfriend over the weekend in Salinas

A routine vehicle check turned into a crime scene for a homicide over the weekend, Monterey County deputies said.

At 11:30 Sunday morning, deputies found 20-year-old Carole Sangco unconscious in the back seat of a car on Old Stage Road near Alisal Road in Salinas.

The Salinas native was pronounced dead at the hospital.

Her 22-year-old boyfriend, Byron Sumagang, is allegedly responsible for killing her, deputies said. They found him in the back seat as well, and was transported to the hospital for medical treatment and was arrested and booked in the Monterey County Jail.

The cause of death is still under investigation, but deputies added this homicide is out of the ordinary.
