Santa Cruz man’s hot rod headed east for vintage car race

A special vintage car built by a Santa Cruz man is headed to the east coast for the Race of Gentleman next month.

Clay Slaughter of Clayton’s Hot Rods shipped out a recently-built 1929 Roadster on Tuesday.

The car will be raced on Oct. 3-5 in the Race of Gentleman, an annual beach race held on the New Jersey Shore. The event was founded by Oilers Car Club, established in 1947.

Only select cars and motorcycles are accepted to participate.

Slaughter spent much of his life as a union ironworker before turning his passion for vintage cars into a career. He works out of his home, resurrecting old cars and hand building them true to traditional specs.
