Update: One person is dead in a massive big rig accident on the 101

Both northbound lanes of Highway 101 in Salinas were closed down at John Street earlier Friday due to a collision between a big rig and an SUV. Traffic was diverted to Sanborn.

CHP says the big rig, which was carrying an estimated 55,000 pounds of red wine, rear-ended the the SUV around 5:15 p.m. a third car also was involved.

The driver of the big rig and a Subaru were not injured but four other people were injured. Those 4 in a 2015 SUV were either transported by ground or air to local and Bay Area hospitals with various injuries. The right rear passenger in the SUV, a 62 year old female from New York, was unresponsive at the scene and transported to Salinas Valley Memorial Hospital. She was later pronounced deceased at approximately 6:26pm

Wine was leaking on to the roadway from the truck, according to CHP.

The tanker truck, transporting wine for a Stockton-based company, may have been making a lane change before the John Street exit before it hit the SUV and then collided with a sedan.

CHP plans to have all lanes on Northbound 101 open by 9:30 p.m. Friday night.
