CHP to crack down on speeding, aggressive driving in Santa Cruz, Monterey counties
The California Highway Patrol is planning a crackdown on speeding and aggressive driving in Santa Cruz and Monterey counties.
Between Aug. 28 and Sept. 1, extra CHP officers will be deployed along Highway 1, Highway 101, Highway 9 and numerous county roadways.
This increased enforcement is joint effort to reduce the number of fatal and injury traffic collisions attributed to aggressive driving, unsafe speed, unsafe passing, and improper turning movements along with other moving violations.
This joint enforcement effort was made possible through the Reduce Aggressive Driving Incidents and Tactically Enforce Speed II Grant. Funding for the RADIATES II Grant was provided by the California Office of Traffic Safety, through the National Highway Traffic Safety Administration.
In 2013, the Santa Cruz and Monterey CHP Areas investigated a total of 1,662 traffic collisions on Highways 1, 9 and 101. The primary cause of those collisions was unsafe speed — 48 percent – of accidents, followed by another 19 percent caused by unsafe turns.
