Monterey Car Week brings boost for local economy

Monterey Car Week is not just about the cars. For most locals on the Central Coast, it’s also about big money. For many local businesses, this is their most profitable time of year.

“The average per check goes way up. The $300 and $400 bottles of wine tend to move a little bit faster,” said Dominic Mercurio, a part owner of Domenico’s on the Wharf.

Mercurio said this their busiest time of year. Compared to the last three years, business is up 20 percent.

“It’s great for business. It’s just great to have these people in town,” said Mercurio.

Hotels also see a big boost in business, with some filling up months in advance.

“Since April we’ve been sold out,” said Alex Isidro, the front office manager at the Holiday Inn Express on Cannery Row.

Isidro told us it’s so busy they even have to turn people away, and beef up staffing.

“It can get pretty crazy but once everyone is checked in, everyone is out at the event,” said Isidro.

More people means more traffic and less parking. If you’re heading out to the many Monterey Car Week events, make sure you plan ahead.
