Salinas Police: Online murder confession is a hoax
Salinas police say that claims made online by an anonymous user purporting to have fatally stabbed a Salinas girl 17 times and dumped her body in Alameda County are false.
Commander Henry Gomez of the Salinas Police Department said Julissa Romero, 12, is alive.
“Her whereabouts are accounted for,” he said.
Gomez said Romero is with her mother in Mexico.
Gomez said the department has received dozens of phone calls in regards to the post, which has been written about on several other websites and blogs.
Internet users contacted Salinas Police after an anonymous user on the website Omegle listed geographic coordinates and a message saying the body of Julissa Romero would be found there.
Omegle is a website that allows anonymous strangers to make comments and confessions to other anonymous users.
Romero was reported missing out of Salinas in April. Gomez said that although she is still listed as missing online, the police department knows where she is and she is, in fact, alive.
The location listed by the poster is in the East Bay area. Gomez said the coordinates were tracked to a construction site.
