Salinas teen wins scholarship for collecting, delivering eyeglasses to Jamaica

A Salinas teen is being recognized with a $1,000 scholarship from Kohl’s Department Store for her work in collecting eyeglasses for individuals in need in Jamaica.

Grace Khieu, 16, hosted an eye glasses drive and collected more than 500 pairs of glasses that were then donated to the Alliance of Jamaican and American Humanitarian to distribute to individuals in need in Jamaica. She even traveled to the Caribbean country with the organization to help provide treatment to those who’d never had an eye exam before.

She is one of 200 youth volunteers to be awarded a $1,000 scholarship through the Kohl’s Cares Scholarship Program. She was chosen from more than 37,000 nominees nationwide for making a positive impact in her community.

Each regional-level winner now qualifies for one of Kohl’s 10 national scholarships, which will be announced at the end of July. National winners will each receive a total of $10,000 in scholarships. Kohl’s also will donate $1,000 to a nonprofit organization on each national winner’s behalf. To find out more about the program and the rest of the regional winners, click here.
