Mortar-like device explodes in Pacific Grove parking lot

A loud explosion Saturday night broke windows, shattered lights, set off car alarms and shook buildings in one Pacific Grove neighborhood.

Police said around 12:30 a.m. officers arrived at the location on Presidio Boulevard and Austin Avenue to investigate the noise. Neighbors said they could smell smoke similar to that from fireworks.

After a search of the area, a large homemade mortar-like device was discovered in the parking lot of Enviro-Temp Heating and Cooling at 1236 Presidio Blvd. The building’s windows and exterior light fixtures were shattered.

No injuries were reported or other property damage.

The device was taken to be processed as evidence.

The investigation is ongoing. Anyone with additional information is urged to contact Pacific Grove Police Department 831-648-3143.
