Corrections officer stabbed at Salinas Valley State Prison by inmate

An inmate at Salinas Valley State Prison stabbed a correctional officer with a homemade weapon Friday afternoon, prison officials said.

Around 12:50 p.m., inmate David Gomez, 48, reportedly slipped out of his handcuffs and stabbed an officer repeatedly in the head.

Gomez was in the Administrative Segregation Unit at the time.

The officer was taken to a local hospital for treatment. His condition is unknown.

Gomez was sent to the California Department of Corrections in 1998 for a 91-year prison sentence on charges of rape, child molestation and burglary out of Los Angeles County.

He’s currently standing trial in Monterey County for the 2004 homicide of his cellmate at Salinas Valley State Prison, and has a lengthy history of assaults against attorneys, custodial staff and fellow inmates

Friday’s incident will be turned over to the Monterey County District Attorney’s Office for prosecution.
