CDPH gives green light for band and drumline performances

SALINAS, Calif. (KION) The California Department of Public Health has classified band, drumline, choir, and drama as low-contact activities.

However, live performances from choir and drama are not allowed under the current guidelines.

Kate McAfee is a senior at Salinas High and a trumpet section leader for the Salinas High Marching Band. Since the beginning of the pandemic, the band has been unable to play together. Before, band members saw each other regularly. They would have a one-hour class and two to three hours of practice three to four days a week.

Their preparation has consisted of just playing their instruments online, as a section leader, Kate says it's been hard.

"It's very hard especially for my teacher because he calls a couple of kids to play their instrument and the wifi cuts out and you can't really hear anyone. It makes music especially very, very difficult," says Kate.

The California Department of Public Health has announced that it will allow band and drumline to perform on the sidelines but what does this mean for schools on the central coast?

A district spokesperson for Salinas Union High School District says, "The District's Return to Play Safety Plan does not include language regarding school bands at this point in time. Given the change in guidance from CDPH provided on Monday, the district will reevaluate the plan and consider the safety implications for everyone involved."

The waiting is tough on students. As for Kate, she misses her friends most of all and the connections made through music.

"I miss my friends so much. I miss seeing everyone every single day. I'm a very social person, waking up everyday in my bed every single day and just opening up my computer screen like that takes a toll on someone," says Kate.

The MPUSD says they are currently reviewing the guidelines.
