Santa Barbara attacks prompt action from lawmakers

Lawmakers say the state Legislature needs to do more to deter the type of violence that killed six young people over the weekend near the University of California, Santa Barbara.

That includes statewide protocols for all law enforcement officers who are called to check on mentally troubled people.

Elliot Rodger, the 22-year-old who carried out the deadly attack, said in his manifesto that he was relieved when officers who checked on him last month left without searching his apartment and finding his cache of handguns.

Two other lawmakers on Tuesday proposed legislation that would help keep guns away from mentally ill people who threaten violence. It would allow people to press for restraining orders so family member or friends who might turn violent could not buy or possess firearms.
