Woman shot on Santa Cruz street; officers tracking suspect

Santa Cruz police are seeking a suspect they say shot a 20-year-old San Jose woman Monday night near the San Lorenzo River levee.

The woman was walking with another female and two males, all between the ages of 14 and 20, on Third Street near Raymond Street just before 8 p.m. The group heard someone whistle and attract their attention. Two men called out to the group and made hand gestures at them, and one began shooting at them.

The group ran towards Riverside Ave as the suspect fired at them. The 20-year-old woman was struck in the upper arm as she fled on foot. She was taken to a Santa Clara County hospital for evaluation, Santa Cruz police said.

No one else was injured and the two suspects fled on foot.

Officers closed much of the area while they searched for evidence and canvassed the neighborhood contacting potential witnesses.

Anyone with information on the incident is asked to contact the Police Department’s Investigation Unit at 420-5820 or call the anonymous tip line at 420-5995.
