Pacific Grove man pleads guilty to burglarizing home, fighting homeowner

A Pacific Grove man has admitted to burglarizing a home and then fighting with the homeowner, Monterey County prosecutors said.

Raymond Gutosky, 58, pleaded guilty to four residential burglaries, assault on a homeowner and possession of stolen property.

In July, Gutosky entered a home after watching the homeowner and his wife drive away. The homeowner returned about 10 minutes later and found Gutosky stealing his wife’s jewelry. The homeowner armed himself with a knife and told the other man to stay until police arrived.

Gutosky went after the homeowner, pummeling him until the homeowner stabbed him, wounding him severely. Gutosky stumbled outside, got into a getaway car and fled, but left behind his cellphone.

That evening, police caught up with Gutosky at a San Jose hospital, arrested him and searched his residence. They found multiple items of jewelery reported stolen from three other recent burglaries in Monterey, Pacific Grove, and Carmel Valley.

Gutosky is expected to be sentenced next month to 34 years and eight months in prison. The sentence is enhanced by the fact that he has two prior convictions for residential burglaries out of Los Angeles County.
