Breast cancer survivor from Monterey to be honored by SF Giants
A Monterey woman will be honored at tonight’s San Francisco Giants game as an honorary bat girl.
Eleanor Uhlinger was selected as the winner of the 2014 Honorary Bat Girl contest, which honors those who have been affected by breast cancer. A total of 31 women were selected winners, each for a different team.
Uhlinger will be honored during an on-field ceremony tonight at AT&T Park where the Giants will take on the Atlanta Braves.
Uhlinger has just moved to Monterey in 2006 to become the university librarian at the Naval Postgraduate School when she was diagnosed with breast cancer. She underwent rigorous treatment while still working hard to serve students and faculty.
She now serves as recording secretary for the Breast Cancer Assistance Group of Monterey. The organization sponsors educational programs and raises funds to provide financial assistance to women on the Central Coast who have breast cancer and are undergoing treatment.
In 2009, she was presented with the Federal Librarian of the Year award in by the Library of Congress.
Tonight she will also get to attend batting practice and meet with the team’s Pablo Sandoval.
