Large tree crashes into two homes in Santa Cruz

Santa Cruz firefighters responded to Dolores Street in the Seabright neighborhood Wednesday evening after a large tree crashed onto two houses.

According to Central Fire District Battalion Chief Walsh, it happened shortly after 9 p.m., between 6th and 7th avenues, blocking Dolores. There was one person in each home, but no one was injured. The drought and wind are believed to be contributing factors to the tree’s fall.

The cypress tree that fell is about 4 feet in diameter.

Walsh said each home had exterior damage and said the tree did not break into either structure. “They were very lucky,” said Walsh.

Dolores Street will remain blocked through Thursday until Santa Cruz County Public Works crews arrives to clear the roadway.

Power was knocked out to 4 residences. Pacific Gas & Electric crews responded and should have power restored by Thursday morning, according to Central Fire.

Fire officials clarified early reports and said a transformer did not blow following the crash. “The loud explosion was likely the sound of the tree falling,” said Walsh.
