Immigration-reform supporters rally on May Day

May Day demonstrators are taking to California streets, calling for immigration reform and improved wages and working conditions for workers.

Crowds of students, workers, labor officials and religious leaders marched Thursday in downtown Los Angeles, and other rallies are planned in San Francisco, San Jose and Oakland.

Rallies in Oakland two years ago and LA in 2007 left many injuries when police used tear gas and other weapons to disperse protesters.

But this year’s march at noon in Los Angeles was peaceful, and police say no arrests were made.

Protesters are offering support for legislation under consideration by Congress that would overhaul laws and bring many of the estimated 11 million people living in the U.S. illegally out of the shadows.
