Salinas eases worries over unchecked fire hydrants

Salinas’ budget cuts over the last several years left the fire department no longer able to test fire hydrants citywide, but help is on the way.

A new cooperative agreement between the city and the California Water Service Company will ensure the fire hydrant system is functional when needed most. The three year agreement is for hydrant maintenance and blue marker installations within Cal Water’s service area. The blue marker program is the public safety identification system of fire hydrant locations throughout Salinas for first responders to quickly locate a water supply in an emergency.

The city called the partnership a milestone in making sure people are protected.

Salinas Fire Chief Edmond Rodriguez said this will provide for all necessary testing, hydrant maintenance, repair work.
