Santa Cruz confirms H1N1 killed two men

The cause of death for two men between the ages of 30 and 50 has been confirmed as H1N1.

Laurie Lang, senior health educator with the Health Services Agency, said they have been awaiting confirmatory test results since December 2013.

They received the notification Thursday from the California Department of Public Health laboratory.

This brings the total number of deaths due to influenza in Santa Cruz County to five for the 2013-14 flu season.

Three deaths in Monterey County were blamed on the flu. Those victims were under the age of 65, bringing the total number of deaths in that county to five as well.
