Treasurer of High School Band Booster Club Accused of Stealing Money
San Benito County Sheriff’s deputies arrested the treasurer of the Baler Band Booster Club after they say she stole money from the club.
Debra Curtis was appointed as treasurer in July 2013 and resigned last month. Investigators say she obtained the booster club ATM card and used it for her personal gain.
The Sheriff’s Office says the account was drained of the $57,000 that had been raised. Deputies believe the embezzlement occurred between July 2013 and February 2014.
The band director found out the account was drained when the bank refused to cash a check.
“Music programs are often the first things cut when the budgets are reduced,” said Dr. William Barr, Superintendent of the district. Dr. Barr added, “They need supplementary support from parents and community groups.”
More than 100 students are involved in San Benito’s band program.
Dr. Barr told Central Coast News, “Anytime any loss occurs, it ends up at the door step of the students and their education.”
