Friday Outlook for the Pfeiffer Fire In Big Sur

The Pfeiffer fire burning since Sunday night has forced several evacuations, but fire crews said good progress was made over the last two days, despite a cold front that moved in Thursday. As of Friday evening, the fire was 88 percent contained.

U.S. Forest Service announced the Pfeiffer Fire burned 937 acres. Twenty-two structures have been destroyed. Fire managers said they plan to scale back on the number of crews Friday. They’re going to build a smaller team of about 100 people who will stay here through Christmas Day.

Crews were able to make good progress on constructing lines in all areas of the fire and they have been able to start mop-up operations. Friday’s plan of action will be to continue to improve the fire lines and hold any hot spots from the fire. Crews said that the fire is creeping northwest and southwest.

Other workers are checking for falling trees and rocks along Highway 1 in the burned areas.

Rehabilitation plans are being developed in coordination with local forest resource advisers. A public meeting was held Wednesday night to keep local residents informed as well as to receive input from the community, U.S Forest Service officials said.

Sycamore, River Inn and Pfeiffer roads are still closed and evacuations of residences in the Pfeiffer Ridge community are still in place..
