SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) Police in Santa Cruz are investigating a shooting they believe was gang-related.

Police responded to several reports of gunshots near Third and Front streets and near Cowells Beach at around 9 p.m. Sunday.

While they were investigating, police said they found bullet casings and a light pole that looked like it had been hit by a bullet. Witnesses told officers they saw two cars speeding, and possibly chasing each other, when the shots were heard. Another person said two people in a dark car came up and asked if they had a gang affiliation.

Detectives are still investigating the shooting and looking at security video.

Police are asking for help a vehicle connected to the investigation. It is described as a dark-colored sedan with tinted windows. A witness told police they may have seen "BL" or "8L" in the middle part of the rear license plate. Police ask that anyone who sees it calls 831-471-1131 and not to approach it.

Anyone with information about the case is asked to call Santa Cruz police at 831-420-5820.
