Debate over Biden projected victory
MONTEREY, Calif. (KION)
The cold temperatures and strong winds did not stop a group of local Democrats from going out to celebrate President Elect Joe Biden's projected victory, in Monterey on Sunday.
As key states continue counting votes and with President Donald Trump filing elections lawsuits, a debate is now ongoing between between Democrats and Republicans regarding the possibility of a different outcome.
While tensions were high leading up to the elections, it appears that is not stopping.
The group of Biden supporters were met with local Republicans and some heated words were exchanged.
Police on site were able to intervene quickly, but just a couple hours later, video captured a person driving by who threw a beverage can at a Trump supporter.
While the debate continues and votes are still being counted, Political Analyst Dave Anderson says a change in results favoring President Trump is not too likely.
“The best he can hope for would be some minor ruling somewhere that can affect a few hundred votes...he’s losing by tens of thousands in various key states. There’s no indications out there that anything would change the outcome, it’s over," says Anderson.
Biden supporters say it is safe to call the official winner of the race but Republicans say otherwise.
"It's not over until it's over, it's like calling the score in the fourth quarter, you can't do that," said one Trump supporter.
Monterey County Republican Party member Lyle SKeen said, "I think what President Trump is doing is a good thing, he needs to take it to the Supreme Court."
State Senator Bill Monning says the odds of the results favoring President Trump are not likely.
"There's not enough electoral votes, even if he were to win every outstanding state," says Monning.
When it comes to having a Presidential race come this close, Political Analyst Dave Anderson says, "It's not unusual to have the country so evenly divided."
