University Park Elementary student brings weapons to school, incident under investigation
Salinas City Elementary School District says an incident where a student brought weapons to school is under investigation.
They say Monday morning, staff and school administration were made aware of a student who brought
weapons to school, but there were no immediate threats related to this incident.
Officials tell us their staff, who are trained on risk prevention, noticed a change in student behavior and were diligent in addressing the situation.
The district is working collaboratively with Salinas Police Department and the situation is
currently under investigation. All students and staff are safe.
When students are in possession of a weapon or firearm, according to education code
(Education Code, Article 1, 48900(M)), this may lead to suspension or possible expulsion from
school.
District officials ask that parents assist them by ensuring their child’s backpack contains only items needed for their educational experience, such as pencils, books, binders, etc.
SCESD and districts across the country are highly sensitive to any risks that involve weapons of
any kind. This prompts districts to look, notice and assess all students exhibiting at-risk behavior.
In a statement, they say, “As a district, we cannot emphasize the motto enough, “If you see something, say something. Standing and working together as a community, we will keep our staff, students and schools safe. Thank you for your cooperation and partnership with University Park Elementary. Normal
school operations were not disrupted.”
