CAPITOLA, Calif. (KION)

State and County beaches on the Central Coast are closed for Labor Day weekend to avoid overcrowding, according to local officials.

Efforts were futile in some beaches as law enforcement attempted to remove beachgoers from shores who were not engaging in sports or exercise activities.

Officials say people not following the rules at county beaches could face $1,000 fine or misdemeanor.
