Driver dies after going over cliff near Gray Whale Cove

SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KION) A driver has died after her vehicle went over a cliff off Highway 1 Monday.

Cal Fire CZU, the agency responding to the CZU August Lightning Complex Fires south of the crash, responded to the area near Gray Whale Cove to rescue the driver.

According to the CBS affiliate in the Bay Area, the car came to a stop 200 feet down the cliff and 100 feet above the beach. The California Highway Patrol told KPIX that witnesses reported seeing the woman get out of the vehicle before falling further down the cliff.

Crews were able to rescue her and transport her to a local hospital in critical condition, but KPIX reports that she died of her injuries.
