Flooding across Monterey County from Monday’s relentless storm

MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION 2019) Gutters overflowed with water and, in some spots, vehicles entire tires were covered as Monterey saw flooding around the county.

“The storm drains, they’re flooded and I was driving like 35 miles per hour and the car moves over from the splash,” Salinas resident Raul Napolis said.

Highway 101 just south of Salinas even saw a back up from flooding near Esperanza Road.

“Down in Greenfield [it wasn’t bad] if I would have known the weather was like this over here I would have just stayed home,” Robert Lujan who was getting gas in Prunedale said.

However, flooding wasn’t the only issue from the relentless rain. On Castroville Boulevard in Prunedale, a massive tree fell early this morning knocking down a power line. Public Works had to close down a lane of traffic all day while they waited for PG&E to restore the power line.

At Carmel River State Beach, the lagoon has already risen to the level where public works has to step in and create a channel.

“To lower the sandbar here, and that’s going to allow the Carmel lagoon to drain naturally. The last couple of years it’s been later but it definitely came quickly but the time was right now to act,” Dan Bertoldi with Monterey County Public Works said.

CHP reported roadway flooding in several sports in Salinas, along Highway 68, and further south along Highway 1.
