Santa Cruz County announces citations for health order violations in unincorporated areas
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) The Santa Cruz County Board of Supervisors has approved an ordinance allowing citations to be issued for health order violations. It applies to unincorporated parts of the county.
The ordinance applies to health orders issued by state or local health officials, and it is in response to an increase in the number of COVID-19 cases and hospitalizations.
Law enforcement or designated staff members will be able to issue fines of $100 for the first violation, $200 for the second and $500 for a third within a calendar year. It goes into effect immediately.
A spokesperson for the county tells KION that they have received complaints about face coverings, and specific concerns are about businesses not enforcing face covering orders.
The ordinance applies to all health orders, including an order to wear a face covering. The county hopes that by issuing citations instead of considering violations misdemeanors, it will help the people enforcing it to address the situation without escalating it.
Enforcement is expected to mainly focus on face coverings and gatherings.
