Great Plates Program supports seniors and restaurants during pandemic
SANTA CRUZ COUNTY, Calif. (KION) Every day, Anette March gets a delivery from Pearl of the Ocean Organic Restaurant.
March is living alone during the pandemic, but California's Great Plates Program makes sure she is taken care of.
"It's been such a big support for me to not have to worry about where my food is coming from," said March.
March has not been to a grocery store in months.
"It's hard being a shut in as they call us. Just seeing David's face everyday when he comes. They bring me these beautiful meals," said March.
The preparation process starts around 5 a.m. everyday at Pearl of Ocean Organic Restaurant.
"This is the opportunity God gave to me. I want to bring people the light they've never had before," said restaurant owner, Ayoma Wilen.
Wilen owns one of five Santa Cruz County restaurants chosen to prepare and deliver meals to hundreds of seniors. Pearl of the Ocean has delivered over 2,500 meals during the pandemic.
The CARES Act funds 75% of the Great Plates Program. 18.75% is funded by the state. The remainder is payed for by the county.
The program has allowed Wilen's business to stay afloat while business is slow.
"I had a lot of bills pilling up every day. It's not only me. A lot of businesses are going through the same thing. When I got this opportunity, I felt truly blessed," said Wilen.
The program not only provided people with job, but new frienships to make hard times a little easier.
"It's just beyond feeling cherished and taken care of," said March.
Santa Cruz County will continue the program through August 9, 2020. If you know of a senior who would benefit from the Great Plates Program, call 831-454-4406.
