Two King City-area CHP officers injured in Paso Robles shooting response
KING CITY, Calif. (KION) The King City-area California Highway Patrol office confirms that two of its officers were injured while assisting with the Paso Robles manhunt for Mason Lira, the suspect in a shooting at the police station.
According to KION's sister station in Paso Robles, the officers are Tim Maxwell and Isaac Clocherty.
One of the officers has returned to work and the other is still taking days off, but the CHP said their injuries were minor.
KEYT reports that Maxwell was one of three members of law enforcement who were taken to the hospital after an exchange of gunfire with Lira. In a news conference, the San Luis Obispo County Sheriff's Office said a Kings County deputy, identified as Blake Bursiaga, was shot in the leg while helping a CHP officer to safety during the exchange. Bursiaga has returned to work.
Clocherty reportedly sustained a minor injury while searching for Lira, according to KEYT.
Law enforcement responded to the area when Lira allegedly opened fire outside the Paso Robles Police Station. A San Luis Obispo County deputy was shot in the face while searching for Lira.
In the exchange of gunfire the following day, Lira was killed.
