Highway 68 Corridor Improvement Project may include roundabouts
Details on a Highway 68 Corridor Improvement Project are being released as Caltrans prepares to present its plan to the public.
A possibility is placing one or multiple roundabouts at intersections between Josselyn Canyon Road and San Benancio Road. Caltrans says this has been discussed so far for each of the nine intersections involved with this project.
The other possibility is simply improving on the lighted intersections already present on that stretch of the highway.
Residents chimed in, saying they’d like to see the 68 widened or have a lane added through a bigger portion of the road.
“I live in a section where we don’t even have a bust that comes close to my home,” says Monterey resident, Alma Castro.
She says ease of access to and from Highway 68 also presents safety issues.
Meanwhile, Caltrans says they’re also looking into providing safe wildlife crossings along the highway.
“It’s both a safety issue for the animal and the drivers,” says David Filberberger with Caltrans. “The more we remove that danger for both, the safer of a highway we will have.”
Caltrans is seeking input on this project, which is only in its beginning stages and will likely see any life to it some time after 2023.
If you wish to check out the designs Caltrans has so far and would like to provide your input, the meeting starts at 5 p.m. Thursday evening.
It’ll take place at the Monterey-Salinas Transit Admin building at 19 Upper Ragsdale Drive, Suite 200 in Monterey
