West Cliff Drive reopening after suspicious device cleared safe
SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) Santa Cruz police said a suspicious device found at the 100 block of Bay Street is not a threat to the community.
They said a suspicious-looking 18-inch pipe with duct tape on both ends with visible wires hanging out found by a pedestrian does not pose a danger.
Police and the Bomb Squad responded when it was called in and found that it was non-destructive.
UPDATE 6/10/2020 2:15 p.m. Santa Cruz police tell KION that the scene on West Cliff Drive has cleared. They are taking down tape and expect to have West Cliff open soon.
UPDATE 6/10/2020 2 p.m. Santa Cruz police have blocked off part of West Cliff Drive while they investigate a what may be an explosive device there.
Police said a suspicious cylinder object was found near the gutter near the intersection of West Cliff Drive and Bay Street.
The Santa Cruz County Sheriff's Office bomb squad is at the scene and has blocked off West Cliff Drive from Beach Street to Cowell Street.
Pedestrians are being rerouted and police are asking those nearby to shelter in place.
