Salinas awarded $276,000 in funding for victims’ advocate position

The Salinas Police Department announced Friday that the city has been awarded the U.S. Department of Justice Victim Specialist Program grant.

A victims’ advocate position through the law enforcement-based victim specialist program was approved for $276,000 in funding in Salinas.

The money comes from the federal Crime Victims Fund, and it comes from fines, penalty assessments and bond forfeitures of convicted federal criminal offenders instead of tax dollars. It was established to secure funds to benefit programs for crime victims.

Salinas police said the grant shows the commitment of the department to work with local, state and federal partners to improve service to crime victims, families and the community.
