Hollister police awarded traffic education and enforcement grant

Hollister police announced Monday that the department received a grant for a one-year traffic enforcement and education program.

The grant is from the California Office of Traffic Safety, and the money will go toward activities intended to reduce the number of deaths and injuries on roads.

Some of the programs the grant will fund include:

DUI and driver’s license checkpoints.
Patrols looking for suspected alcohol and/or drug-impaired drivers.
Patrols targeting violations of the hands-free cellphone law and other vehicle code violations.
Patrols targeting speeding, improper turns, running stop signs or signals, right-of-way violations and driving on the wrong side of the road.
Patrols looking for seatbelt and child safety seat violations.
Educational traffic safety presentations for community members on distracted and impaired driving, bicycle and pedestrian safety.
Serving warrants to multiple DUI offenders.
Creating “Hot Sheets” that identify repeat DUI offenders.
Officer training to find suspected impaired drivers and conduct sobriety tests.

The activities will happen between Oct.1, 2019 and Sept. 30, 2020.
