Salinas PD investigating carjacking near high school

The Salinas Police Department is investigating a brazen armed carjacking that happened last Friday night during a high school football game.

Police tell KION the crime took place at the intersection of Coventry and Inglewood Streets in North Salinas, right across from Alvarez High School.

A girl and her boyfriend walked back to their car parked in that neighborhood to get their jackets. That is when police say they were confronted by two men.

Police say the couple was sitting in their car when two men approached their vehicle, smashed one of the windows and forced them out of the vehicle, all at gunpoint.

A woman who says she is the mother of the girl posted on the Salinas Crime Watch page on Facebook, saying the two suspects yanked her daughter’s hair and choked her during the ordeal.

Police say the two suspects sped off with the car, which CHP troopers found on Old Stage Road a few hours later. Neighbors are stunned the peace was broken in such normally quiet area.

“That’s scary. I think that’s something… having children, that’s something that makes me fearful for my family and my kids to be out knowing that that happened in our
neighborhood,” said a woman who did not want to be identified.

Salinas police only have a vague description of the two suspects. They are described as male, Hispanic in their 20s with medium builds, with both wearing dark clothing.

“One carjacking is one too many,” said Miguel Cabrera, a Salinas Police spokesperson.

The thieves stole some property out of the car, and now investigators are checking the car for fingerprints and anything else that could help crack the case.
