Revisions in Monterey County shelter in place order include outdoor activities

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION)

Today is the first day of the extension for the shelter in place order in Monterey County and restrictions are loosening for some outdoor activities and businesses deemed essential.

Some of those revisions include allowing places like nurseries, childcare, educational programs, fabric and craft stores, low-risk landscaping and plumbing to reopen and continue providing any essential services.

Recreational activities like hiking, biking and going for a run at the parks and beaches are allowed but the order states people should keep a look out for signs prohibiting the use playgrounds or outdoor gym equipment, and barbecue pits.

Golf and tennis courses will also reopen but those playing can only be family members or from the same household.

Business transactions that require in-person sales such as housing or buying a car will also be allowed but only two members of the same family or household will be allowed to be present for signing.

The owner of Mike's Auto Sales tells KION his company made virtual changes to the way people normally purchase cars.

"We've made it easier for selling on our website so we have a full inventory, plenty of pictures, we have an online application and we also have E-signing so customers only have to come in here to do an E-signing and then we deliver the vehicle to them," says Malik Yasin

The county also gave clearance for drive-through faith services for churches.

Saint Mary of the Nativity Church in Salinas did say they are open to the idea of having services given over speakers for people to pull up and listen to but are also concerned this could potentially attract a lot of people.

County health officials say the number of COVID-19 cases have slowed down locally, but health and safety of the public is still their top priority.

Face masks and social distancing are required for all activities.

Residents are still ordered to only leave their homes for essential activities.
