CHP identifies driver recorded going off cliff near Gray Whale Cove
SAN MATEO COUNTY, Calif. (KION) San Francisco CHP has released the identity of the person the agency believes drove off a cliff near Gray Whale Cove back in December.
On Dec. 30, the California Highway Patrol responded to a report of a vehicle that drive off a cliff while heading north on SR 1 south of Gray Whale Cove. The incident was caught on dash cam video by another driver.
The dash cam footage shows a Lexus SUV veering off the road and into the ocean below.
Many agencies searched the area, but were unable to find the driver or the vehicle, and ocean conditions kept them from searching more.
San Francisco CHP continued to investigate the incident, and with help from the San Mateo County Sheriff's Office, human remains and a California driver license belonging to Tracey Ivori Sinclair of San Francisco were found on Montara State Beach. A DMV search showed investigators that Sinclair owned a 2007 Lexus SUV.
The CHP said Sinclair had been reported missing by her family, and a DNA match confirmed that the remains were hers.
Through circumstantial evidence, investigators determined that Sinclair was the driver of the Lexus seen on dash cam footage going off the cliff for unknown reasons.
"The San Francisco Area CHP would like to express our heartfelt condolences to the victim’s family and friends. We would also like to extend our sincere gratitude to our allied agencies whose efforts greatly contributed to the outcome of this investigation. Finally, we would like to thank the public for your support, patience, and assistance throughout this ongoing process," the CHP said in a statement.
