Local Unions push back against layoffs

MONTEREY, Calif. (KION)

General Employees of Monterey (GEM) is the union representing some of the 100 city workers who are being considered for layoffs at a City Council meeting today.

According to a press release, the city cited this idea was proposed due to the lack of funding and lack of work but GEM stated they do not agree with this decision.

They say laying off these employees “will only result in additional negative impact on the local economy.”

They also say they want the city to consider other options to ease revenue loss such as large across the board cuts to generous executive salaries, one-time use of the city’s financial reserves, terminating contracts with third parties to provide non-essential services to the city and temporary furloughs. 

The union is worried this decision could lead to permanent service reductions if it does pass.
