Public hearing to take place on future of Fort Ord blighted property
The future of blighted properties on the former Fort Ord remains up in the air.
On Tuesday, the Monterey County Board of Supervisors decided there will need to be a public hearing on the issue.
The board was presented with three different options by the Fort Ord Reuse Authority. One option is a FORA bond secured by FORA property tax, a second is debt secured by FORA property tax and the third option is debt using new tax increment financing tools.
Supervisors said it’s about time something is done about the run-down properties that many people complain about.
"They've been sitting here vacant for a long time. They're nothing but an eyesore. They get more deteriorated as each day goes by. Each time I come in and out of here I tell myself 'when are they gonna tear the rest of these down?'" said Marina resident Caroll Rupert.
In a unanimous vote, the board voted to continue action toward a public hearing and studies related to a bond issuance. That public hearing could happen as early as December.
