SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) The COVID-19 pandemic has left many in need, including pet owners.

To help those struggling, the Santa Cruz County Animal Shelter said it will host a free pet food pantry.

Food can be picked up at its Education Center at 2260 7th Avenue in Santa Cruz on April 21 and 28 from 10 a.m. to 2 p.m.

Unopened pet food can also be donated at the shelter's front door at 1001 Rodriguez Street in Santa Cruz.

The shelter said it is hosting the pet food pantry because the pandemic has led to unemployment and food and housing insecurity for many community members.

"The shelter has always been a resource that serves the most vulnerable animals and people in our community, and our team is here to help," the shelter said.
