Better Ask Barry: Don’t forget proper nutrition during pandemic
There may be a way to help protect yourself against the coronavirus that doesn't involve a vaccine.
Nutritionists like Risa Groux suggests a variety of immune boosters.
“Vitamin A and C,” she says. “You want a buffered C, so it absorbs, and Vitamin D with K so it does absorb."
That is half of the top six supplements Risa recommends to boost your immunity, which is crucial to fight off illness.
"If you're boosting your immune system, you have a greater chance of defending yourself against the virus. It won't be able to live in your body," she says.
Risa says 75-85 percent of our immune system is produced in our gut. We often hear about the importance of a healthy gut and in comes down to this: You are what you eat.
"So eating great food,” say says, “eating lots of food from the earth without chemicals, no rancid oils, no alcohol and sugar. Sugar eats up our healthy gut bacteria."
This means a plate filled with a little bit of animal protein and lots of vegetables. Sleep also helps strengthen your immunity as does exercise.
Rounding out Risa's six important immunity building supplements are Zinc, along with digestive enzymes to break down what you eat.
"Glutathione is our master antioxidant,” she adds. “It helps regulate our immune system so it helps us fight against external and internal attacks."
Supplements like these can be found online and at health food stores. Ask your doctor before you make any changes to your diet, and do your research before you buy. Look for those without additives or fillers because they get absorbed into your body as well.
