SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) In response to the coronavirus pandemic, the Santa Cruz Police Department is making temporary adjustments in an attempt to slow the spread of the disease.

To protect both staff and community members, police said the department's lobby is closed until further notice, but that is just one of the changes the department is making.

Requests for police reports can now be made only over the phone. To get one, call Police Records at 831-420-5870.

When officers need to speak to complainants, police said they will try to keep conversations outdoors when possible and will try to stay 5 to 6 feet away. Some complaints will be done over the phone.

Minor incidents that are not in progress, such as some thefts or frauds, may be handled over the phone to find out if an in-person response is needed. Police ask that if you can avoid calling out an officer, do so, and if an issue can wait, hold it until the health crisis is over.

Written statements can be emailed to officers as well.

Registered sex offenders will be required to check in with law enforcement.

Property Release will be open Tuesdays from 11 a.m. to 3 p.m. and Thursdays from 12:30 p.m. to 2:30 p.m.

If you need help while at the Police Department building, you can speak with a dispatch operator using the intercom phone next to the main entrance doors.

If you have flu-like symptoms, fever or respiratory issues when calling for police services, let dispatchers know so first responders can take safety precautions.

Police also remind residents that many crime reports can be filed online.
