Countless illegal rooster operations active in Monterey County

The animal advocacy group SHARK (Showing animals respect and kindness) took to the Monterey County Board of Supervisors Tuesday to share 30 locations where they’ve discovered of illegal rooster operations.

The group’s drone video shows hundreds of roosters at illegal sites, suggesting possible cock fights. Many of the locations are in the Boronda area near the border of Salinas.

Over the summer, a grand jury report said there is an estimated 1,000 illegal rooster sites in the county.

According to a county ordinance, you are not allowed to have more than five roosters without a permit. There are currently no active permits in Monterey County.

Tonight at 5 and 6 p.m. on KION, Drew Andre speaks with SHARK and the county about whether anything will be done to shut down these operations and why the ordinance hasn’t been enforced.
