MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION) - Legendary icons of the norteño music, Los Tigres del Norte, were honored today for their advocacy.

The board of supervisors awarded a lifetime achievement to Los Tigres del Norte with their day to celebrate and even a key to the county.

The band is being recognized for its dedication to advocacy for immigrant communities.

"The first time we received the name los tigres del norte we were on our way to a concert here in soledad.  That was back in 1968 and so many years later we are honored to receive this recognition from a county that has played such an important role in our career," said lead vocalist and accordionist Jorge Hernandez.

The board also declared that from this day forth, every June 10 will be celebrated as Los Tigres del Norte Day in Monterey County.
