SALINAS, Calif. (KION-TV) - A Salinas native will be honored with their day at this year's California International Airshow.

Everett Alaverez, Jr., will be honored as a hometown hero on Saturday, October 4, during the annual airshow along with a meet-and-greet.

Alavarez, Jr. was the first American aviator shot down over Vietnam and the second-longest-held prisoner of war at eight-and-a-half years in North Vietnam. He was awarded military decorations including a Silver Star, the Distinguished Flying Cross, and two Bronze Stars, two Legions of Merit, and two Purple Hearts.

Everett Alvarez, Jr. High School was named after him in his honor back in 1994.

Other people of note at the Airshow in October will be pilot Vicky Benzing and her P-51 Plum Crazy, a vintage Boeing Stearman, and Ed Hamill and his high-energy aerobatics.
