SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION) A Santa Cruz man is behind bars after police said he attacked another man with a 2x4 piece of lumber.

Police said they responded to a report of a fight on the footbridge at the end of Felker Street Wednesday afternoon. Officers said they found out that the suspect, 38-year-old Chase Mason, attacked the other man because he thought the other man had threatened a relative.

Mason was arrested and charged with assault with a deadly weapon. The other man had multiple cuts on his face as a result of the incident.

Officers also found that Mason had two guns in his vehicle. Because of the alleged attack and the fact that Mason had recently shot himself in the leg while practicing his "quick draw," police requested a Gun Violence Restraining Order. The order allows courts to remove guns from people who are proven likely to use them dangerously while complying with the Second Amendment and Due Process protections of the Constitution.
