Greenfield man dies in wrong way crash on Highway 1
UPDATE 10/24/2019 10:00 a.m. A 30-year-old Greenfield man has died after a wrong-way crash on Highway 1 near Vista Point.
The CHP said at around 11:35 p.m. Wednesday, the man was driving the wrong way southbound on Highway 1 south of Vista Point while speeding.
A man from Palo Alto and a man from Watsonville were in a Ford Mustang also traveling southbound on Highway 1. The CHP said driver of the Mustang was not able to avoid a head-on crash with the other vehicle.
The driver of the car going the wrong way died of his injuries at Watsonville Hospital. Two passengers in the car, a 27-year-old woman from Greenfield and a 25-year-old woman from Greenfield, were taken to Natividad with major injuries.
The driver and passenger in the Mustang also had major injuries and were taken to Valley Medical Center in San Jose.
Southbound Highway 1 was closed for about three hours while CHP investigated. Officers believe drugs or alcohol may be a factor in the crash.
UPDATE 10/24/2019 4:00 a.m. All lanes are reopened around 3:30 a.m.
PREVIOUS STORY: A major accident closed part of Highway 1 in Santa Cruz County. It happened near Vista Pointe Drive on Wednesday night just before 12:00 a.m. Thursday.
All southbound lanes have been closed. Traffic was being diverted onto Mar Monte Avenue.
Two vehicles were involved. Five people were injured but the extent of their injuries are unkown.
