Monterey County unanimously votes to be a ‘welcoming county’
MONTEREY COUNTY, Calif. (KION-TV) -- The County of Monterey Board of Supervisors have voted to reestablish the county as a 'welcoming county' for immigrants and refugees. The resolution would reestablish the county with the designation after first signing a similar resolution back in 2017.
Not only does this reassure immigrants and undocumented workers and families are protect, but also approved $25,000 "Know Your Rights" ad campaign. This would create public service announcements about immigration rights for Spanish radio and television as well as across social media.
County of Monterey District 3 Supervisor Chris Lopez spoke on the resolution.
"Everyone's dependent on the Salad Bowl," Lopez said. "And it's time to start taking care of those people who've shown up to do the work rather than allowing them to be scapegoated and use fear as a tool against them when they came here with hope and a willingness to work hard to help us do what we do best."
