MARINA, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Marina Police are asking for the community's help in identifying loud sounds and explosions reported in the city.

They said that they have received increasing calls from concerned residents as well as have monitored online discussions regarding these noises that resemble fireworks or "potentially illegal pyrotechnic activity."

Police say that people are describing the sounds as startling and disruptive, happening unpredictably and often during the evening and late-night hours.

Now, they are turning to people in neighborhoods to help track down these sounds.

"Reports suggest the noises are louder and more frequent than typical fireworks, leading to heightened concerns across the community," they wrote on Facebook. "We want to assure residents that we are actively investigating these incidents and taking steps to address your concerns."

They are telling people to call 911 immediately if they hear these noises so that Marina police can try and pin-point exactly where the sounds are coming from.

Officers said that they are prepared to respond quickly to reported areas, determine if the sounds are coming from Marina or surrounding neighborhoods and use triangulation methods to identify the source.

They said that they are still experiencing location challenges regarding where the sounds are originating, and that they may actually be traveling from the Dunes area or even as far as Castroville.

"Sound can travel unpredictably, making it challenging to pinpoint the exact source without detailed reports from the community," they said.

Police say that even if someone thinks the sound was already reported, to still call in because every call provides valuable additional information that can help build a clearer picture.

"All reports, no matter how small, are vital to this investigation," they said.

Marina police said that they will continue to provide updates as more information becomes available.

The Marina Police Department can be reached at 831-384-7575.
