SANTA CRUZ, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Downtown Santa Cruz will transform into a Designated Safety Enhancement Zone on New Year's Eve, according to the Santa Cruz Police Department.

They said that, like in previous years, all available officers will be deployed that night to make sure downtown is a safe New Year's Eve environment.

The Safety Enhancement Zone will begin at 8 a.m. on Tuesday, December 31 and end at 8 a.m. on Wednesday, January 1.

During this time, police say that there will be triple fines issued for certain law violations like having an alcoholic beverage in public as well as other illegal behavior-related activities.

The police department says that they will be actively patrolling downtown to enforce laws and minimize problems.
