Del Rey Oaks police say they caught a man and woman for stealing 95-year-old veteran’s wallet on Christmas Day

DEL REY OAKS, Calif. (KION-TV) -- Del Rey Oaks police say that they've arrested a 66-year-old Seaside man, John McMercury, in connection to an alleged wallet theft the occurred Christmas evening.

Police say that upon investigation, they learned McMercury was waiting and watching a 95-year-old veteran from his in his white GMC truck. The victim said that he accidentally left his bag with the wallet inside a a shopping cart.

Police say that McMercury was able to get the victim’s bag and use several credit cards at nearby businesses.

A second suspect, 56-year-old Monterey resident Paula Roman, was discovered as an alleged accomplice to McMercury.

After conducting a search and recruiting community help, Del Rey Oaks police said that a Community Service Officer from the Salinas Police Department found the suspects in their truck in Salinas.

Police say that they arrested McMercury and Roman on charges of felony theft, elder abuse and other charges, and that the victim's wallet had personal items inside that "were of extreme sentimental value" to the victim.
